Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has approved plans for a comprehensive $8.2 billion (AED30 billion) rainwater drainage network. This ambitious project, named ‘Tasreef,’ aims to significantly increase Dubai’s rainwater drainage capacity by 700%, thereby bolstering the emirate’s preparedness for future climate challenges.

Sheikh Mohammed highlighted that the initiative represents the largest rainwater collection system in the region. The new network is expected to collect over 20 million cubic meters of water daily, catering to Dubai’s needs for the next century. The project is set to cover all areas of Dubai, surpassing the capabilities of existing infrastructure in managing rainfall.

Implementation will commence immediately and proceed in phases, with completion targeted for 2033. This strategic infrastructure development will maintain and enhance Dubai’s urban and infrastructural assets, promoting safety and security for all residents.

The Office of Sheikh Mohammed stated that Dubai Municipality will oversee the project, adhering to the highest international technical and engineering standards. This project aligns with the Municipality’s strategic objectives for the integrated management of rainwater and sewage systems, underscoring a commitment to sustainability and improved quality of life in Dubai.

State-of-the-art Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), the largest in the Middle East, will be utilized for the project, known for their efficiency, speed, precision in excavation, and capability to manage diverse topographical conditions.
