Dubai Unveils Dh650 Million Plan to Transform Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Jul 2, 2025 - 3 min read

Dubai Municipality has unveiled a major initiative to revamp the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, allocating Dh650 million towards its development. The ambitious plan is structured into two distinct phases, with the initial phase projected for completion by the end of 2026 at a cost of Dh100 million.

The comprehensive redevelopment is aimed at enhancing biodiversity and promoting the sanctuary as a key destination for ecological tourism. With this project, Dubai seeks to elevate its position among the world’s top three travel hotspots, incorporating the expectations of both local residents and international visitors into the sanctuary’s design.

Sustainability and Habitat Enrichment at the Core

As part of the environmental enhancement efforts, the project will introduce a 60 per cent increase in mangrove coverage by planting new mangrove trees. In tandem, existing mangrove areas will be rehabilitated, and a new network of irrigation channels will be established to support these ecosystems.

The first development phase will notably expand aquatic environments within the reserve by 144 per cent, growing the waterbody area to 74 hectares. This expansion is expected to improve the sanctuary’s carbon absorption capacity by 60 per cent. Furthermore, an additional 10 hectares of mudflats will be integrated to create diverse ecological zones.

Infrastructure and Visitor Experience to be Elevated

Phase two of the project, scheduled for a future stage, will center on upgrading infrastructure and recreational facilities. These improvements will facilitate the hosting of environmental and community-focused events. A dedicated visitor center will also be constructed as part of the development.

Visitors will benefit from 5.6 kilometers of newly constructed cycling routes and 3 kilometers of walking trails, offering an immersive experience in nature. The project is a collaborative effort between Dubai Municipality and the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority.

Preserving a Biodiversity-Rich Landmark

Spanning approximately 6.4 square kilometers, Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary stands as one of Dubai’s most vital ecological reserves. Recognized in 2007 under the Ramsar Convention for Wetlands of International Importance, it also adheres to conservation guidelines set by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The sanctuary supports a thriving ecosystem with nearly 450 plant and animal species, including 47 hectares of mangroves. It serves as a seasonal refuge for around 20,000 migratory birds, with flamingos being a particularly iconic presence.

Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, described the redevelopment as a significant advancement in preserving and enhancing Dubai’s natural habitats. “The unique design and scope of the project highlight our dedication to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development through innovative environmental practices,” he said.
